Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Receives $20,000 Grant from The Connelly Foundation to Boost Hunger Relief Efforts And Feed Families In Need

Nutritional Development Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (NDS) recently received a $20,000 COVID Response and Recovery grant from the Connelly Foundation to boost hunger relief efforts and feed families in need throughout the five-county Philadelphia region. The awarded funds are being used to provide nearly 2,000 frozen, four-person style casserole meals to families facing food insecurity and financial challenges stemming from the ongoing pandemic. Approximately 670 of the casseroles have already been distributed to households throughout the area by way of NDS’ sponsored community food distributions. The casseroles were handed out alongside other nourishing food items benefitting children, individuals and families. The remaining 1,330 meals are in the process of being delivered to NDS’ network of over 50 food cupboards and outreach programs throughout the five-county metropolitan area. To prepare the meals, NDS partnered with Philabundance Community Kitchen to create three varieties to be distributed to those in need. Ms. Lizanne Hagedorn, executive director of NDS said, “Anticipated ongoing economic hardship during the winter months inspired the production and distribution of these healthy and hardy meals for individuals and families.  They complement the distribution of children’s meals at schools and community locations.  NDS is grateful to the Connelly Foundation for the opportunity to augment the food resources available to communities in need.” NDS has been on the frontlines of the fight against hunger for nearly five decades. Since the pandemic began, NDS has provided non-stop critical support and assistance to thousands of individuals, seniors, families, and children across the region with food and food related resources. Nutritional Development Services Of The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Launches Annual “One-Can Meal” Lenten Food Drive

In 2020, Nutritional Development Services collected nearly 18,000 pounds of non-perishable canned “one-meal” items to help stock the shelves of its food cupboards and outreaches. Nutritional Development Services (NDS) of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is launching its annual “One-Can Meal” food drive to enable broad and meaningful participation in the Lenten season. Lenten food drives help fulfill the season’s call to almsgiving. This year’s effort is especially critical when many across the Philadelphia region are faced with increased food insecurity and financial challenges stemming from the ongoing pandemic. Those interested in helping our neighbors in need can support NDS’ Community Food Program by purchasing “one-can” meal food items online through You Give Goods at www.yougivegoods.com/ndslentenfood. All goods donated now through March 30 will be distributed throughout the five-county area to NDS’ network of over 50 food cupboards and outreach centers. NDS is also partnering with schools throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to organize collections within their school communities. Participating faculty, staff and students are encouraged to collect non-perishable “one-can” meals such as canned meats, soups, and beans to benefit those in need. To further help food-insecure individuals and families, faithful can also participate in Rice Bowl, an initiative of Catholic Relief Services (CRS). This faith-in-action program provides a tangible way to incorporate prayer, fasting, and almsgiving into our Lenten journeys. A quarter of all donations made to Rice Bowl support NDS and are used to combat hunger and poverty locally.
