Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program 2013-2014

Congratulations!

Pan American Academy Charter School, Visitation School, and Gesu School!

The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) awarded the above schools with the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) grant.  Eligible schools must serve students grades K-8 and meet criteria set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and PDE. The Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program is a federally funded grant that gives qualifying schools access to a wide variety of fruits and vegetables which are served outside of the breakfast or lunch hours. Participating schools serve the fresh produce several times a week throughout the school year accompanied by nutritional education.

This is the second year that Gesu has been awarded the FFVP grant. Principal, Sr Ellen Convoy I.H.M., described it as “the most popular program they’ve had in years!”  Other principals have said the program has helped students cut back on junk food snacks and focus better in the classroom.  Previous grantees include Alliance for Progress Charter School and Community Partnership Charter School.
